A Request for Donation
After years of sustained work, Women's Research and Action Group (WRAG) launches a fund-raising campaign to strengthen our financial base and seek donations to the corpus of our organization. This donation drive is not about alleviating women’s immediate suffering, it is not about provision of basic services of food, health, sanitation or shelter, even as organizations doing so need and deserve support. It is about defending democracy and secularism, about halting the shrinking of democratic spaces, about protecting and promoting women’s human rights, about justice and accountability; and about enhancing diversity and pluralism in society. In recent years and months, all of the above is under serious threat.
WRAG is a non-profit organization, founded in April 1993 and based in Mumbai, India. We are a registered public trust and our activities extend beyond the state and national boundaries. Our vision is for a gender just and secular society founded on the principals of equality, justice, rule of law, human rights and democratic values. Our website has more details about us and our team at:http://www.wragindia.org/aboutus.html
WRAG's work focuses on protecting and promoting the rights, social and legal status of underprivileged women and girls, especially from marginalized communities. We also work at policy level interventions aimed at creating a climate that is conducive for promotion of women’s human rights, dignity and secularism. Our research and publications are on issues of justice and accountability as our overall work is linked to defending democracy and secularism. Details of our work in the last 20 years are available at:http://www.wragindia.org/resources_annual.html
The highlights are:
- A national level research on Muslim Women's Rights in Family Law and published its findings, that led, among other things, to the founding of a national network on rights of muslim women and a series of programs to enhance women’s capabilities in the communities to mediate on issues affecting their lives.
- Empowerment of about 26 local women groups in Mumbai; 6 single women's groups; 6 groups of adolescent girls and a group of community-based men and youth. It involved series of workshops and trainings on issues of civic rights, human rights, women's rights, health and reproductive rights and violence against women
- Engagement in the campaign for justice & accountability: organization and participation in an international panel for justice in Gujarat for the violence in 2002; collaboration in the aftermath of the Khandamal anti-Christian Riots in Orissa, 2010 with other on a national initiative for a peoples' tribunal; collaboration in national and regional consultations around the draft Communal Violence Bill, 2004 and advocacy for inclusion of a gender perspective.
- Raised issues of violence, crimes and violations of rights of women from a wide range of marginalized communities - religious minorities, dalit (lower caste) and adivasi (indigenous) women, women impacted by internal armed conflict and militarization and victims of communal or sectarian violence in several workshops, seminars, consultations and conference organized over many years.
- Published several publications on issues concerning rights of Muslim women, on human rights, on accountability and impunity, and on relevance of international criminal court to India. Some of these are available at ourPublications page
